Data scientists, the BLS occupation that includes many data analyst roles, earned a median salary of $120,230 in May 2025, and computer systems analysts, another occupation where analytics skills are central, earned a median of $105,850 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). Data analytics programs typically teach you to collect, clean, query, and visualize data so that managers can make decisions based on evidence rather than guesswork. Training is available as short certificates focused on tools like SQL and Tableau, associate degrees that add statistics and programming, and bachelor’s degrees in data analytics, business analytics, or statistics.
Data Analytics Salary Snapshot
U.S.A data analytics program trains students to turn raw data into usable information. The work starts with pulling data from databases and spreadsheets, cleaning and organizing it, then summarizing patterns with statistics and presenting findings in charts, dashboards, and written reports. Analysts sit between the technical teams that store data and the business teams that need answers, so programs combine technical tools with communication skills.
Programs differ mainly in depth. Certificate programs, including those offered through community colleges and industry providers, concentrate on the core toolkit: spreadsheets, SQL, and a visualization platform such as Tableau or Power BI. Associate degrees add introductory statistics, a programming language (usually Python or R), and general education. Bachelor’s degrees go further into statistical modeling, data management, and domain-specific analytics such as marketing, finance, healthcare, or operations, and typically finish with a capstone project using real data.
Certificate programs are the shortest route and are typically measured in months, depending on whether you study full time or part time. An associate degree in data analytics or a related field is typically two years of full-time study. A bachelor’s degree is typically four years, and many students transfer an associate degree into a bachelor’s program to shorten the remaining time.
Whichever route you take, expect a large share of your time to go into hands-on projects, since employers evaluate analysts on work samples.
No license is required to work as a data analyst. Employers rely on degrees, portfolios, and optional certifications. Common credentials that programs typically align with include:
Certifications are optional and do not replace a portfolio, but they can help when your degree is in another field or when applying to employers that standardize on one tool.
Degree-granting programs should hold institutional accreditation from a recognized accreditor (for example, HLC, MSCHE, SACSCOC, ACCSC, or DEAC). Business analytics degrees housed in a business school may additionally hold AACSB or ACBSP accreditation. Verify accreditation status directly with the school and the accreditor.
The BLS does not publish a standalone “data analyst” occupation. Analysts are spread across several occupation codes depending on their industry and job title, including data scientists, computer systems analysts, operations research analysts, and market research analysts. The two most relevant codes for graduates of analytics programs are shown below. Both groupings include workers with more advanced skills and titles than a typical entry-level analyst, so the medians here should be read as the broader occupation, not as a starting salary.
Data scientists (SOC 15-2051): The median annual wage was $120,230 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning $67,240 and the highest 10 percent earning $199,130 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). Employment was 262,440. The BLS projects employment to grow 33.5 percent from 2024 to 2034, with about 23,400 openings per year on average (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-34). This BLS category was expanded in the 2018 SOC revision and now includes many workers with “data analyst” titles alongside those with more advanced modeling roles.
Computer systems analysts (SOC 15-1211): The median annual wage was $105,850 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning $67,340 and the highest 10 percent earning $167,710 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). Employment was 519,530. The BLS projects 8.7 percent growth from 2024 to 2034 and about 34,200 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-34). Systems analysts study an organization’s data and systems to recommend improvements, and business systems analyst roles frequently draw from analytics graduates.
Salaries vary widely by location, industry, employer, and the level of statistical and programming depth a role requires.
Analysts are employed in almost every sector: corporate finance, marketing and e-commerce, healthcare systems and insurers, banks, logistics and manufacturing, government agencies, nonprofits, and consulting firms. Job titles vary: data analyst, business analyst, business intelligence analyst, reporting analyst, and operations analyst all describe overlapping work. Many roles are hybrid or remote, though analysts embedded in operations or healthcare teams often work on site.
Data analytics is well suited to online study. The tools are software, datasets are downloadable, and projects can be reviewed remotely. Fully online certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees are widely available from accredited colleges as well as from industry providers.
When comparing online programs, look for graded projects with instructor feedback rather than auto-graded quizzes only, access to real or realistic datasets, instruction in both SQL and at least one programming language, and a capstone that produces a portfolio piece. In-person programs offer more direct collaboration and easier access to internships through local employers, which can matter if you have no prior work history in a data-related role.

Other technology training paths that share coursework with analytics:
Most analysts start in a reporting or junior analyst role, often within the industry they already know, and progress to senior analyst, analytics manager, or business intelligence developer positions. Those who deepen their statistics and programming skills sometimes move into data science or data engineering, which usually calls for additional education. A strong portfolio matters more than any single credential: aim for a few complete projects that show a clear question, the SQL or Python used to answer it, a well-designed visualization, and a written recommendation. Domain knowledge, such as healthcare, finance, or marketing, is often what separates candidates with similar technical skills.

Data analytics focuses on describing what happened and why, using SQL, spreadsheets, statistics, and visualization to answer business questions. Data science extends into predictive modeling and machine learning and typically requires more advanced mathematics and programming. The BLS groups many data analyst jobs under its data scientists occupation, which is why the salary figures on this page reflect a broader mix of roles than entry-level analytics alone.
Many analyst job postings list a bachelor’s degree, but the field is more flexible than most. Employers hire certificate and associate degree graduates who can demonstrate skills through a portfolio, and people often move into analyst roles from within their current company after building SQL and dashboard skills. A bachelor’s degree becomes more important for senior, specialized, or data science roles.
Either is acceptable, and most programs typically teach one of them. Python is more widely used in industry and connects more easily to software engineering and cloud tools. R remains common in statistics-heavy fields, academia, and some healthcare and research settings. SQL is more important than either for most analyst roles, so make sure any program you choose covers SQL thoroughly.
Both are widely used, and the skills transfer between them. Power BI is common in organizations that already run Microsoft products, while Tableau has a long history in dedicated analytics teams. Learn one well and try the other; the design principles behind good dashboards are the same in both.
Introductory statistics and college algebra cover most analyst work. You need to understand averages, distributions, correlation, basic hypothesis testing, and regression well enough to know when a result is meaningful. Calculus and linear algebra become relevant only if you move toward data science and machine learning.
Include a few complete projects rather than many partial ones. Each should state the question, show the data source and how you cleaned it, include the SQL or code, present a clear visualization, and end with a recommendation written for a non-technical reader. Public datasets from government agencies or open data portals are fine as long as your analysis goes beyond a tutorial.
