  • Academy first, degree later. Earn Firefighter I/II and EMT certification through a regional or community college academy, get hired, then complete a degree part time. Some schools award credit for academy training and certifications.
  • Degree with an embedded academy. Some community colleges run a state-certified academy inside the associate degree, so you graduate with both.
  • Bachelor’s completion. Firefighters with an associate degree or substantial credits often enroll in an online completion program built for working responders.

Hands-on components, such as live-fire training in a burn building, apparatus operation, ladder and hose evolutions, and search and rescue drills, require in-person attendance. Academic-only degrees do not include these and pair with separate academy training.

Many colleges offer fully online associate and bachelor’s degrees, often designed for working firefighters who need asynchronous coursework that fits around shift schedules.

What cannot be done online is the hands-on side: Firefighter I/II certification, live-fire training, apparatus operation, and EMT clinical hours all require in-person attendance.
