Most MLT programs award an associate degree, and the program you choose should hold accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). NAACLS accreditation matters because it is the most direct route to eligibility for the ASCP Board of Certification MLT exam, and because many state licensing boards and employers use it as a baseline screen. The MLT associate degree is typically a two-year program at a community college, technical college, or hospital-affiliated school. The first portion focuses on prerequisite science courses such as general biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and college-level math, followed by the core laboratory science sequence. The final portion of the program is a clinical practicum in which you rotate through the departments of an affiliated hospital or reference laboratory, performing real patient testing under supervision.
Some programs offer a certificate-style MLT track for students who already hold a degree in a related science field; these skip the general education requirements and concentrate on the laboratory curriculum and clinical rotations. Bachelor’s degree programs in medical laboratory science take roughly four years and lead to the MLS credential rather than the MLT credential. The primary credential for graduates is the MLT(ASCP) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification. Graduates of NAACLS-accredited MLT programs qualify for the exam through the standard education route. The computer-adaptive exam covers blood bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, urinalysis and body fluids, and laboratory operations. Once certified, technicians maintain the credential through the ASCP Credential Maintenance Program, which requires documented continuing education on a three-year cycle.
State licensure is a separate matter. A minority of states require clinical laboratory personnel to hold a state license in addition to, or in place of, national certification. In those states the licensing board sets its own education, exam, and renewal requirements. Elsewhere, employers set their own hiring standards, and most hospital laboratories expect or require ASCP certification regardless of state law. Check the requirements of the state where you plan to work before choosing a program, and confirm that your program’s graduates are eligible for licensure there.
Many certified MLTs later pursue the bachelor’s-level medical laboratory scientist credential. MLT-to-MLS bridge programs are designed for working technicians and credit the associate degree and clinical experience toward the bachelor’s degree. The bridge typically adds upper-division coursework in advanced hematology, clinical chemistry, molecular diagnostics, and laboratory management, along with additional clinical hours. Completing a bridge and passing the MLS(ASCP) exam opens the door to higher-complexity testing, supervisory roles, and specialist certifications.
The BLS groups medical laboratory technicians and medical laboratory scientists together as Clinical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians (SOC 29-2010). For that combined occupation, the median annual wage is $62,930, the 10th percentile is $38,910, and the 90th percentile is $100,990 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). Because the category blends associate-level technicians with bachelor’s-level technologists, MLT wages tend to sit toward the lower and middle portions of that range while MLS wages and supervisory positions account for much of the upper end.
Employment in the combined occupation stood at 332,940 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). The BLS projects growth of 1.7 percent from 2024 to 2034, with about 22,600 openings per year over the decade (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-34). Most of those openings come from replacing workers who retire or leave the field rather than from new positions. Demand for laboratory testing is tied to an aging population, chronic disease management, and the continued expansion of molecular and point-of-care diagnostics.
Hospitals employ the largest share of medical laboratory technicians. Hospital core labs run around the clock, so evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts are common, and shift differentials are a standard part of many compensation packages. Within a hospital, MLTs may rotate across departments or specialize in one area such as the blood bank, hematology, or microbiology.
Outside hospitals, MLTs work in independent reference laboratories, physician office laboratories, public health laboratories, blood donation centers, and outpatient clinics. Some technicians move into veterinary diagnostic labs, research laboratories, or laboratory equipment and reagent companies. Work in every setting involves standing for long periods, handling biohazardous specimens with proper protective equipment, and maintaining close attention to detail under time pressure.
A number of NAACLS-accredited MLT programs deliver the didactic portion of the curriculum online or in a hybrid format. Lecture content in hematology, chemistry, and microbiology theory can be completed remotely, and some programs pair online coursework with scheduled on-campus laboratory sessions. The clinical practicum, however, is always in person. NAACLS standards require supervised hands-on experience in an approved clinical laboratory, and the ASCP education route depends on completing it.
If you are considering an online or hybrid program, confirm three things before enrolling: that the program holds NAACLS accreditation, that it will arrange a clinical placement in your area or that you have a qualifying laboratory willing to host you, and that its graduates are eligible for licensure in your state if your state requires it.

A medical laboratory scientist (MLS), sometimes still called a medical technologist, holds a bachelor’s degree and is qualified for high-complexity testing, method validation, troubleshooting, and supervisory responsibilities. Both take ASCP Board of Certification exams, but the MLS exam covers deeper content. The BLS reports wages for both roles as a single occupation, so the technologist role generally accounts for the higher end of the published range.
It depends on the state. A minority of states license clinical laboratory personnel, and in those states you will need to meet the state board’s education and exam requirements before working. Programs schedule the practicum near the end of the curriculum, and it is a required component that cannot be completed online.
Many people choose the laboratory precisely because most of the work happens behind the scenes. MLTs interact mainly with specimens, instruments, and other laboratory staff, though some positions include phlebotomy duties or point-of-care testing that involve direct patient contact.
