What Is an MRI Technologist Program?

An MRI technologist program prepares students to perform magnetic resonance imaging examinations under the direction of radiologists. Unlike X-ray and CT, MRI uses a strong static magnetic field and radiofrequency pulses rather than ionizing radiation, which means the curriculum centers on magnet safety, MR physics, pulse sequences, and cross-sectional anatomy rather than radiation protection.

Programs come in two forms. Post-primary programs serve technologists who already hold an ARRT credential in radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, or sonography, adding the structured MRI education and supervised clinical experience ARRT requires for the (MR) exam; they are often offered as certificates through hospital imaging departments or colleges. Primary pathway programs are built for students with no prior imaging credential. They run as certificates or associate degrees and cover patient care, ethics, and imaging fundamentals from the ground up before moving into MRI-specific content.

Because most MRI programs live inside radiologic technology departments, prospective students should confirm that a program is either JRCERT-accredited or recognized by ARRT as meeting its educational requirements for the MR pathway you plan to follow. Programs should hold that recognition before you enroll, since it determines your exam eligibility.

How Long Does Training Take?

Length depends on the route you take. For already-registered technologists, a post-primary MRI certificate typically spans about one academic year of structured education combined with the clinical experience ARRT requires, and some programs let working technologists complete it part time while employed. Because you already hold an imaging credential, the coursework focuses narrowly on MR physics, safety, sequences, and clinical scanning.

For new entrants, a primary MRI certificate program is typically shorter than a full degree but still requires prerequisite science and patient-care coursework, while an associate degree in MRI technology typically takes about two years of full-time study. Associate programs add general education and a broader clinical foundation.

In either pathway, clinical scanning hours are the heart of the training. Students log supervised examinations across multiple anatomic regions and document a required set of clinical competencies. ARRT specifies the procedures that must be verified before you are eligible to test, so program length in practice depends as much on scanner access as on the calendar.

The credential employers look for is the ARRT Magnetic Resonance Imaging certification, written R.T.(MR). Candidates qualify through one of two pathways. Under the post-primary pathway, you must already hold a supporting ARRT credential and document structured education plus the required clinical experience in MRI. Under the primary pathway, you complete an ARRT-recognized MRI program that includes the full didactic curriculum and clinical competencies, then sit for the same (MR) exam.

The exam covers patient care, safety, image production, and procedures. The American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) offers an alternative MRI certification that some employers accept, but ARRT is the more widely recognized registry in hospital settings.

State licensure rules for MRI vary. Some states license MRI technologists separately, some fold MRI into a general radiologic technology license, and others do not license MRI at all. Check your state radiation control or health licensing board before choosing a program. ARRT certification requires continuing education for renewal, and technologists must maintain compliance with ARRT ethics standards.

MRI technologists earn a median annual wage of $95,480, with the 10th percentile at $68,890 and the 90th percentile at $127,670 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). The BLS counted 43,390 MRI technologists employed nationally in May 2025. Employment is projected to grow 7.1 percent from 2024 to 2034, with roughly 2,600 openings per year over that period from growth, retirements, and career changes (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-34).

It helps to compare MRI with its feeder occupation. Radiologic technologists and technicians earn a median of $80,110 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), with projected growth of 4.3 percent and about 12,900 openings per year over 2024-34. The larger opening count for radiography reflects a much bigger workforce, while MRI’s higher median reflects the additional specialty training and the smaller pool of certified technologists. Wages vary widely by state, metropolitan area, employer type, shift, and whether you hold additional modality credentials.


Where You’ll Work

Hospitals employ the largest share of MRI technologists, staffing inpatient, outpatient, and emergency imaging around the clock. Freestanding outpatient imaging centers are the next largest employers and tend to run weekday schedules with less on-call. Orthopedic, neurology, and sports medicine practices increasingly operate their own scanners, mobile MRI units serve rural hospitals on a rotating schedule, and some technologists work in university research imaging centers.

Work environments are shaped by magnet safety: technologists control access to Zone IV, screen everyone who enters, and manage emergencies around the magnet. Scans are longer than X-ray exams, so coaching anxious patients is a daily task. Hospital roles commonly involve evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; outpatient centers are more predictable.


Online vs In-Person Options

MRI technologist programs cannot be completed fully online because ARRT eligibility depends on documented, supervised clinical competencies on real scanners with real patients. What can move online is the didactic portion: MR physics, safety, cross-sectional anatomy, and pathology are frequently delivered through hybrid formats, which is especially common in post-primary certificates aimed at working technologists.

Do I need to be a radiologic technologist first to become an MRI technologist?

No. The post-primary pathway does require an existing ARRT credential such as radiography, but ARRT also recognizes a primary pathway for students who complete an ARRT-recognized MRI program without a prior imaging credential. Many hospitals prefer technologists who hold both R.T.(R) and R.T.(MR) because they can cover more than one modality, so the primary pathway is a real option but may narrow your choices at some employers.

What is the difference between ARRT (MR) and ARMRIT certification?

ARRT is the registry most hospitals and state licensing boards reference, and its (MR) credential can be earned through either the post-primary or primary pathway. ARMRIT is a separate registry focused solely on MRI and is accepted by some outpatient centers and employers. If you are unsure, check job postings in your area and your state licensing rules before choosing a program, since some programs are designed around one registry’s requirements.

What are the MRI safety zones?

The American College of Radiology defines four zones. Zone I is public space, Zone II is the reception and screening area, Zone III is the controlled area where only screened people may enter, and Zone IV is the scanner room itself, where the magnet is always on. Technologists screen every patient, visitor, and staff member for implants and ferromagnetic objects before entry to Zones III and IV. Zone management is a major part of program curricula and the ARRT (MR) exam.

Are MRI technologist programs accredited?

Look for JRCERT accreditation or explicit ARRT recognition that a program meets educational requirements for the MR pathway you plan to use. JRCERT accredits programs in radiography, radiation therapy, medical dosimetry, and MRI. A program should hold that status before you enroll; verify it directly on the accreditor’s website rather than relying on a school’s marketing materials.

How many clinical hours does an MRI program require?

Rather than a fixed hour count, ARRT requires candidates to document a specific list of clinical procedures and competencies, each performed a set number of times under supervision. Programs translate those requirements into scheduled clinical rotations, and total time depends on scanner access and patient volume at the clinical site. Can MRI technologists work in other imaging modalities?

Yes. Many MRI technologists hold multiple ARRT credentials, most often radiography plus MRI, and some add CT. Cross-modality technologists are valuable in hospitals that need flexible shift coverage.
