Software development programs typically train you to design, write, test, and ship the applications that run on phones, browsers, servers, and embedded devices. Training is available in more formats than almost any other technical field: coding bootcamps, college certificates, two-year associate degrees, and four-year bachelor’s degrees in software development, software engineering, or computer science.

What Is a Software Development Program?

A software development program typically covers the full cycle of building software: gathering requirements, designing a solution, writing code in one or more programming languages, testing it, and deploying and maintaining it. Programs go by several names, including Software Development, Software Engineering, Applications Development, and Computer Programming. Computer Science degrees cover much of the same ground but add more theory (algorithms, discrete math, computer architecture) and less applied project work.

The defining feature of a good program is that you write a lot of code. Expect weekly programming assignments from the first term, group projects that mimic real team workflows, and a capstone or portfolio project near the end that you can show to employers. Programs differ mainly in depth, duration, and how much theory surrounds the practice.

How Long Does Training Take?

Software development has four common training paths, and they are not interchangeable:

  • Coding bootcamps are intensive, typically full-time programs that run a few months and concentrate on one stack (most often JavaScript-based full-stack web development). They emphasize building projects quickly and skip most theory. Part-time bootcamp schedules run longer.
  • College certificates in programming or software development typically take under a year at a community college or university continuing education division. They cover one or two languages and basic application development, often as a stepping stone to an associate degree.
  • Associate degrees (AAS or AS in Software Development or Computer Programming) typically take two years and combine programming courses with databases, web development, and general education. Many are designed to transfer into a bachelor’s program.
  • Bachelor’s degrees (BS in Software Development, Software Engineering, or Computer Science) typically take four years and add algorithms, operating systems, computer architecture, software architecture, and usually an internship or senior capstone.

A bachelor’s degree remains the most commonly listed education requirement in software developer job postings. That said, hiring practices vary considerably by employer: many startups and mid-sized companies hire bootcamp and associate degree graduates with strong portfolios, while large enterprises, government contractors, and defense employers more often hold to a degree requirement.


Admissions & Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED for certificate and associate programs; bachelor’s programs may require SAT/ACT scores, a minimum GPA, and specific high school math courses
  • Math placement: associate programs usually require college-level algebra; bachelor’s programs in software engineering or computer science often require calculus and discrete math
  • Bootcamps typically require an application, a logic or coding assessment, and sometimes completion of free prep coursework rather than a formal academic transcript
  • A capable laptop, since nearly all coursework is done on your own machine
  • No prior programming experience for most entry-level programs, though many recommend completing a free introductory course first to confirm interest
  • Transfer credit evaluation for prior college coursework or certain industry certifications

Licensing & Certification

Software development is not a licensed profession, and unlike networking or cybersecurity, there is no dominant industry certification that employers expect. Hiring decisions rest mainly on your portfolio, technical interview performance, and education. That said, a few credentials are recognized in specific niches:

  • Cloud developer certifications (AWS Certified Developer, Microsoft Azure Developer Associate, Google Associate Cloud Engineer) matter for cloud-heavy roles
  • Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE for Java-focused enterprise environments

For degree programs, the school should hold regional institutional accreditation. National employment in the occupation was 1,687,890, making it one of the largest computer occupations in the country.

The strongest online programs replicate what makes in-person study valuable: live instruction, regular code reviews from instructors, pair programming, and group projects with real collaboration through Git. Self-paced programs with no instructor interaction demand a great deal of discipline and give you less feedback on your code, which is where most learning happens. In-person and hybrid programs offer easier access to study groups, campus career services, and local employer networks. Do I need a degree to become a software developer?

Bootcamp or degree: which is better?

They serve different goals. A bootcamp is a focused, short-duration path into one stack, best suited to people who already hold a degree in another field or who want a shorter route to a first job in a market that hires bootcamp graduates. A degree takes longer but provides theory, broader options, and eligibility for employers with firm degree requirements.

Which programming language should a program teach?

The first language matters less than the fundamentals it teaches. Python and JavaScript are the most common first languages in current programs, with Java and C# common in associate and bachelor’s curricula. What matters more is that the program covers data structures, version control, testing, and at least one full application stack. Once you know one language well, learning the next is much faster.

What should be in my portfolio when I graduate?
