What Is a Web Development Program?

A web development program trains students to plan, build, test, and maintain websites and browser-based applications. The curriculum divides into two halves. How Long Does Training Take?

Web development has several common entry paths of different lengths:

  • Certificate programs at community colleges and university extension divisions typically take under a year and focus on a core stack (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, plus one back-end language). They suit career changers and people who already hold a degree.
  • Coding bootcamps are intensive programs that run a few months full time (longer part time), almost always centered on JavaScript full-stack development. They prioritize projects over theory.
  • Associate degrees (AAS or AS in Web Development or Web Technology) typically take two years and add databases, server administration, design fundamentals, and general education. Many transfer into bachelor’s programs.
  • Bachelor’s degrees in Software Development, Computer Science, or Information Technology typically take four years and treat web development as one specialization within a broader software curriculum.

Self-paced online certificates from platforms and vendors also exist and vary widely in depth. For any option, look at the projects graduates produce, since employers evaluate web developers primarily on their portfolio.

  • High school diploma or GED for certificate and associate programs; bachelor’s programs may require SAT/ACT scores and a minimum GPA
  • Math and English placement testing at most community colleges; college algebra is a common associate degree requirement

The lowest 10 percent earned under $48,100 and the highest 10 percent earned over $162,290, a wide spread that reflects the range from junior front-end positions at small agencies to senior full-stack roles at large technology companies. Do I need a degree to become a web developer?

Requirements vary by employer. Web development is among the most portfolio-driven technical fields, and many agencies, startups, and small businesses hire based on demonstrated work rather than degrees. Larger companies and government employers more often require an associate or bachelor’s degree. A strong, deployed portfolio matters in every case.

Should I learn front-end or back-end first?

Nearly every program starts with front-end fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) because they produce visible results quickly and are required for any web role. Back-end skills build on that JavaScript foundation.
